Hi we are planning to open a Coffee House end of May…?

we have put a lot of work in it and we are located in a very small town in Ontario Canada…now the problem is that we just found out that the fine dining place from right across our business has closed and is renting it out to someone who is planning to open a coffee house there (right across from us), this would be very bad news for us and we are really very worried about our future….is there anything we can do to fight it or do we just have to accept the competiton…..please help??

If you were in the US, you would not have much you could do about it legally.

My suggestions,

New business normally fail in the first 2 years, don’t assume that they are going to do a perfect job.

Keep your debit to a minimum, Personal and Business debit. You may need to work for a year or two without making much money yourself while the business is getting established.

Have the best customer service! Coffee is coffee, having that carismatic person behind the counter that remembers customers names and the way they like their coffee is priceless! If you have two employees, get one that is younger and one that is a retired person. BOTH must have perfect people skills! A history in retail sales would be a plus. Above all they have to be happy people, customers do not want to spend money on a product and have the server complaining about their job, or just dumpy about life in general.

Quality, Quality, Quality, do not pinch penneys so tight that you sell inferior products, keep a strict limit on the length of time the coffee can keep before replacing it with fresh.
