Cyst on kidney – should I have been treated ?

Hi,

I am a 35 year old male. In October 2007, I spent three days in hospital with pains in my side. After x-rays, an ultrasound, CT scans and a negative CT scan, I was told that I have a 5 cm cyst on my left kidney.

Since then, the pain comes and goes, and I take pain killers to quell the pain.

When I last saw a specialist at my local hospital two weeks ago, he signed me off, saying that cysts are common in older people, and that at 5cm the cyst should not affect my “quality of life”, and to go to my local doctor if there is more pain.

What will my doctor do that the specialist could not.

My wife and I plan to emigrate back to her native Canada sometime this year, but I am worried that the cyst will have repercussion for both my health and visa application.

Is there anyone out there who suffer from a cyst on the kidney and if so, how was it dealt with ?

Any responses would be appreciated.

Thanks

GW

I would INSIST on having it removed. Over dramatize the pain if you have to. Tell them it does interfere w your quality of life. My doctor told me a story about another doc that had a patient and she had a lump near her bra line, the doc said it was nothing to worry about, but she insisted and got a second opinion, it was cancer. She recommends that people insist anyways. Because if you arent too worried about it, they wont be.
