Visa for Germany for US citizen?
Hi, I have a student visa to live in Sweden, but it expires on December 31. I am leaving Sweden to go to Germany from the 26th to January 2nd when I go home. Is this allowed, or do I need to extend my visa or something??
Just to be clear, I’m going home to the US on Jan. 2nd.
You’ll need to extend your visa, since Germany is in the Schengen area, or face a possible ban/fines. I know a few people that have received bans for overstaying their visas by only a few days, and it’s not something you want if you ever plan to travel in Europe again. Once your visa has expired, you have to leave the Schengen area for 90 days before you can reenter.
I think you may encounter problems with this, though. According to the Sweden immigration site:
“Is it possible to extend a visa while in Sweden?
It is not possible to extend a visa. However, you can apply for a residence permit for a visit at one of the Migration Board permit units if you wish to stay longer than the time covered by a visa. However, this carries an extra cost of SEK 1,000 per adult and SEK 500 for children under the age of 18 years.”
To extend a student visa, you must show that you are still enrolled at a school in Sweden. If you are leaving for the US, I’m assuming this isn’t the case. I’m also not sure that your student visa allows travel to other countries before leaving Schengen, they are usually issued for only one country.
You need to speak with someone at the migration board as soon as possible, especially since things will close down soon for Christmas/New Year. Best case scenerio, there will be a loophole that allows an extension, worst case scenerio you will have to rebook your tickets home.
