Can H4 visa open a company and get paid?

Hi,
I am on a H4 visa (dependent on H1-B visa). I was thinking about opening a company that is registered under my name, and taking over a franchise.
Can I do this? Is it legal? If I profit, can I pay myself?
Thanks.

As noted, it wouldn’t be legal as a H4. However, you could always apply to USCIS to change your status, and then it would be legal. If this is something important enough to you, consult a good immigration attorney to see what would be the best way for you to do this, and how long it will take. There will be a fair amount of paperwork involved, and it will take time.
